This is a Wilkinson medium duty Royal Artillery sword. Records show it was sold in 1888 to William Eteson Wailes, and the engraved blade carries his monogram, “WEW.” Wailes served as Deputy Assistant to the Director in the Ministry of Munitions, and he also served in WWI. The Milner archive letter is included, with much history on this officer. Overall Very Good to Very Good+.

Fun fact: Britain created the Ministry of Munitions in 1915 under David Lloyd George to solve the “Shell Crisis,” a severe shortage of artillery shells on the Western Front. Wailes’ service there tied him directly to one of the biggest challenges of the war.
