This M1903A3 throat erosion gauge, also known as an M1903A3 breech bore gauge, is new, made in the USA.

How it works: Like the M1 Garand gauge, it measures how far wear has worn away the start of the rifling at the chamber end of the barrel, with lower readings meaning less wear. Throat erosion gauges are calibrated for specific rifles, so a 1903 gauge should be used on a 1903 and an M1 gauge on an M1.

Fun fact: During WWII, the M1903A3 was made by Remington and, starting in 1942, by the Smith-Corona Typewriter Company at its plant in Syracuse, New York. A typewriter maker turned out more than 200,000 of these rifles.
