Description

An exceptionally rare and historically significant example of a Sauer Model 38H chambered in 7.65mm (.32 ACP), this pistol is marked on the left top of the slide with the engraving “SA der NSDAP Gruppe Thüringen.” This marking identifies it as one of the few known Sturmabteilung (SA) issue pistols—custom-engraved for specific Nazi Party regional groups during the late 1930s to early wartime period.

The pistol bears Crown N commercial proofs on the frame, slide, and barrel, consistent with original factory inspection standards. It retains approximately 90% of its original blued finish, showing only light holster wear. The bore remains in excellent condition, sharp and bright. This variant includes black Bakelite grips with the Sauer & Sohn (S&S) logo, and features the later-added slide-mounted thumb safety—an uncommon transitional detail seen on late-production or special-order examples.

Serial number #263223 falls firmly within the known range of authenticated SA-marked Sauer 38H pistols (others documented include #263186 and #263907), further confirming the authenticity and correctness of this example.

The full rig includes its original brown leather breakaway holster, embossed with the SA logo on the front lid and DRGM / Akah manufacturer’s mark under the closure tab. Inside, it retains factory “Sauer 7.65” ink stamps, matching the pistol both in style and preservation—approximately equal to 90% condition overall.

This offering represents one of the most desirable collector-grade Sauer 38H variants known—an SA-engraved “Gruppe Thüringen” issue pistol, all-original and complete with its holster. A verified example of one of the most elusive World War II-era German sidearms.
