The Swiss Model 1872 was the country’s first standard military cartridge revolver and was originally chambered for a 10.4mm rimfire round. In 1878, existing revolvers were updated to use the more modern 10.4mm centerfire cartridge, creating the Model 1872/78 designation. These early revolvers were manufactured in Liège, Belgium, by Pirlot Frères and were based on the influential Chamelot-Delvigne system. The brass construction places this example within a highly unusual experimental group, making it far more significant than a standard military-production revolver.
