This is a Dreyse 1835 needle fire single shot pistol in .34 caliber. It has the forward-facing loading lever and is unmarked, with a 7 1/2″ octagon barrel and a checkered walnut stock with a fluted butt. It has a nice 95% plum finish and an excellent bore. Antique.
Johann Nikolaus von Dreyse invented the needle fire system in the 1830s. A long, needle-shaped firing pin pierces a paper cartridge and strikes a primer at the base of the bullet, making it one of the first practical breech-loading systems.
Fun fact: Dreyse’s needle gun helped Prussia win the 1866 war against Austria. At the Battle of Königgrätz, Prussian soldiers fired about six rounds a minute with their breech-loading needle rifles, while Austrian soldiers with muzzleloaders managed only one or two.
