This is an Arizmendi y Goenaga 1933 Ruby pattern pistol in 7.65mm. The original marking on the left side of the slide has been removed and re-marked in Serbian with their model designation. The checkered walnut grips show a gouge on the left panel. The blue rates about 95%, and the bore is Very Good+. This exact gun was used in a Forgotten Weapons episode, and it comes with some documentation.
During World War I, France supplied the Serbian Army with about 5,000 Spanish-made Ruby-type pistols. Those that survived stayed in Serbian and then Yugoslav armories, and in 1933 the Military Technical Institute (V.T.Z.) at Kragujevac refurbished them, removing the original slide markings and re-marking them in Cyrillic. Collector Michael F. Carrick traced this pistol’s full journey, from Spain to France to Serbia to Yugoslavia, in the research article included with it.
Fun fact: Even after its Yugoslav makeover, this pistol still carries its French safety markings, “Feu” (fire) and “Sur” (safe), a reminder of where it started its military career.
C&R eligible.
