This is an original Austrian Model 1799 socket bayonet with a four-sided spike blade. It has a star proof mark and the number “19” on the shaft. Overall condition is VG.

The Model 1799 was made for the .69 caliber Austrian M1798 flintlock musket, which was based on the French Charleville musket. It was the first Austrian bayonet with the flattened cross-shaped blade that became typical of 19th-century Austrian socket bayonets. Bayonets of this pattern served with Austrian and Hungarian muskets from 1799 until about 1860.

Fun fact: Instead of the usual slot in the socket, the Model 1799 locked on with a notched, off-center collar that caught a spring on the musket stock. The idea worked well enough that Prussia copied it for its own Model 1809 socket bayonet.
